Looking for a quick but satisfying breakfast treat packed with flavor in every bite? Pastry Lu in Metuchen is serving up the best pastries in New Jersey

Metuchen is one of my favorite towns in New Jersey, a walkable suburban destination in Middlesex County that's packed with great stores, restaurants, and attractions around every corner. The main street has frequent turnover, as independent businesses wrap up their run and are replaced with bold new debuts that add some more flavor to the already exciting town. And now, the great food starts earlier than ever in Metuchen.

The town has recently welcomed Pastry Lu, an artisan bakery specializing in French classics fused with international twists, and it has recently moved into a new location right on the town's main street. You can't miss it now, and you'll want to make it a destination if you're in town. This hole-in-the-wall bakery serves up what might be the best pastries in New Jersey, with some flavor combinations you've never seen in a croissant or Danish before.

I've walked down Main Street in Metuchen plenty of times, and it's always great to see a new business. Pastry Lu was tucked away in a less-visible area of the town for a few years, but it's now front and center—as it deserves to be. This charming pastry shop has some of the most innovative desserts and treats in the Garden State.

One of the biggest benefits of the new space is that Pastry Lu now feels more like a full cafe. There are plenty of seats, art on the wall, and lots of room to browse the two display cases filled with the pastries of the day.

This is going to be a hot spot for anyone looking for a decadent dessert—you can find cake, pie, cheesecake, and flan here, among many other offerings. There are also full cakes, which are perfect for bringing to a party.

However, Pastry Lu's signature items can be found in the next case over. Here, you'll find traditional French pastries made with croissant dough, but this bakery doesn't rest on the strength of the classics.

It's worth trying a traditional croissant to start, just so you can enjoy the flavor at its purest. The bakery's croissant is incredibly flaky, with countless layers in every bite. But it's what they do to the classic pastry here that really takes it to the next level.

You'll find plenty of sweet croissants here, topped with fruit or chocolate, but if you can't handle something that sweet in the morning, I was really blown away by the variety of savory options here. It turns out herbs, cheese, and tomatoes go just as well on this phenomenal pastry as sweet toppings!

Have you gotten to try the best pastries in New Jersey at Pastry Lu before? If not, tell a croissant-loving friend about this article and head over to the hottest new spot in Metuchen! You can have some retro video game fun at Yestercades, just across the street, and then you're only a few minutes' walk away from dinner at Hailey's Harp & Pub, one of the best authentic Irish pubs in New Jersey.
