Despite its unassuming exterior, Miga Sushi in Denville, New Jersey, has some of the best all-you-can-eat sushi in the area.
Shortly after moving to northern New Jersey, I couldn’t stop thinking about yellowtail sashimi, spicy tuna rolls, and salmon nigiri. My cravings were so intense that I opened my search engine to find the best-rated sushi restaurant near me. All of my sources pointed me to the same place: Miga Sushi in Denville.
My husband and I hopped into our car and drove to our destination. Imagine our surprise, however, when the GPS brought us to an unassuming strip mall off of Route 53. My first thought was that we’d typed in the wrong address, but sure enough, we spotted Miga tucked between a dollar store and a chain coffee shop.
Emboldened by the promising online reviews—and also by the crowds of people waiting for a table—we decided not to judge a book by its cover. This ended up being the right call, because Miga is now one of our all-time favorite local restaurants. In fact, we dine there at least once per month (though, if I’m being honest, it’s probably more like two or three times per month).
Other residents in the Morristown, New Jersey, area evidently feel the same because Miga Sushi is always packed. We usually wait five or 10 minutes for a table, but during peak weekend dining hours, the wait can extend to 30-45 minutes. The small interior is partly to blame; Miga isn’t the biggest restaurant around, and the inside is just as unassuming as the outside, with a sushi bar and a scattering of tables. It doesn’t take away from the enjoyable dining experience though.
Most customers choose the “All You Can Eat” (AYCE) option at Miga, which lets you order as much as you can consume for 90 minutes. The specialized AYCE menu offers eight types of sashimi, 20 types of nigiri, 18 types of maki rolls, and 15 specialty rolls.
Our personal favorites are the Ms. Tiger Roll (salmon, tuna, white tuna, avocado, and crunch wrapped with soy nori and covered with spicy mayo) and the Kani Lover (crab tempura and cream cheese inside, spicy crab on the top, served with eel sauce and spicy aioli). Of course, you can’t go wrong with classics like spicy tuna or shrimp tempura rolls, and I always get several pieces of sashimi as well.
Something else that sets Miga apart? The “All You Can Eat” option also includes dozens of kitchen items. Along with your sushi, you can order soups, salads, appetizers, tempura dishes, and meat entrees. Some of our go-to favorites include miso soup, kani salad, seaweed salad, edamame, chicken katsu, and broccoli tempura.
No worries if you’re not in the mood for stuffing your face—Miga also offers a standard à la carte menu for lunch and dinner. You’ll find some of the same offerings as the special AYCE menu, along with additional appetizers, rolls, sushi platters, entrees, and more.
Another important note: Miga is BYOB, so if you’re planning to drink, make sure to grab some beer or wine on the way.
Miga is located at 559 E Main St in Denville, New Jersey. The restaurant also has two other locations in the Garden State—Wayne and Livingston—which are also in strip malls. Let it serve as a lesson that, sometimes, the best restaurants aren’t always the flashiest ones.
