New Jersey's best waterfalls are a famous bunch, but as I research the Garden State's cascades, I'm surprised by just how many hidden falls there are that I've never heard of. A perfect example is hidden in Pyramid Mountain National Historic Area, an amazing landscape home to Tripod Rock. But it's also home to an underrated waterfall trail in New Jersey that leads to a small, gorgeous waterfall that isn't visited by too many people. To get there, you'll need to embark on a somewhat challenging journey on the Turkey Mountain Via Red and Yellow Trail, a 4.6-mile loop trail that features rocky terrain and beautiful water views amid one of the state's most unique landscapes. So strap on your hiking boots and come along with us to discover New Jersey's best-kept waterfall secret.
Pyramid Mountain National Historic Area is known for its wide-open hiking areas and stunning vistas...
But it also has a complex, well-maintained trail system. Other trails might be more famous, but the Turkey Mountain Via Red and Yellow Trail has a big surprise waiting.
This is a 4.6-mile loop trail. While the trail is safe, you can expect some rocky terrain and makeshift bridges. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash at all times.
Your main destination is the Pyramid Mountain Waterfall, found on the Yellow Trail. It's one of the best-hidden waterfalls in New Jersey.
It's best seen after rain, when the falls are at their strongest. This might not be a tall waterfall, but it's incredibly peaceful and beautiful.
If you love this hike, brave a return during the winter months - the falls freeze over and have a whole new look that is rarely seen by hikers during the off-season.
