One of the longest trails in New Jersey, the Paulinskill Valley Rail Trail is an incredible winter trail that’s well worth bundling up for.
When it comes to hiking, I’ve always been a bit of an oddball among my friends. During the summer, I’ll usually tap out after about half a mile and can be found sipping an iced tea at the nearest air-conditioned cafe. But in the winter, I can brave the cold for most of the day while everyone else turns into a popsicle. That being said, we all need a little warmth boost sometimes on a snow-capped trail, especially when the trail is a mighty adventure we don’t want to give up on. That’s the case for the Paulinskill Valley Rail Trail, a massive multi-use trail that used to be a former railroad in Sussex and Warren Counties. With trailheads at Knowlton and Sparta, it spans a whopping 27 miles and looks especially gorgeous in the winter. This is one of the more remote hiking adventures in the state, so make sure to pack well for this winter trail in New Jersey, including a pack of hand warmers. I’m partial to the ones from LL Bean since they work fast and will quickly revive frozen fingers.
The Paulinskill Valley Rail Trail is a grand adventure throughout the year. At 26.3 miles, it’s a mixed-use trail that’s popular with cyclists and hikers. No matter the season, you’ll encounter beautiful sights like waterfalls and historic buildings.
But there’s something uniquely beautiful about the trail in the winter, when it’s far more likely to be isolated and the old-school markers are covered in snow. It feels like you’re stepping back into New Jersey history.
This trail is rated moderate, and the terrain varies dramatically as you explore. Some segments are converted railroad tracks, while others may require steady footing. There’s a total elevation gain of 554 feet.
This trail is a popular spot for families, and dogs are welcome as long as they’re on a leash. The best part about this trail is every section is a little different, and it’s a great place to spot local wildlife.
Hiking during the winter is definitely not for everyone, but I find it’s uniquely peaceful in a way that’s very hard to find in the bustling Garden State. This is one of those places that’s absolutely worth coming when you’re ready to bundle up and escape the stresses of everyday life.
