Breathtaking lake views, stunning fall foliage, and a peaceful, secluded escape are just a few things to look forward to when you visit Abram S. Hewitt State Forest in New Jersey.

We all know that fall in New Jersey is special. Our state is one that gets to experience each season fully, and fall is no exception. But finding a secluded spot to enjoy the stunning display of fall colors can get a bit tricky, as, understandably, travelers flock to some of New Jersey's most famous fall destinations: High Point State Park or the Delaware Water Gap, to name just a couple. Fortunately, there are still a few underrated places to enjoy fall in New Jersey, and today, I'd like to highlight the magic of Abram S. Hewitt State Forest.

Nestled between Upper Greenwood Lake and Greenwood Lake, Abram S. Hewitt State Forest isn't exactly undiscovered. It receives a little over 80,000 visitors each year. And yet, compared to other destinations in the Garden State, it offers a feeling of seclusion, immersion, and irresistible adventure. This state forest is unique; it's both isolated and undisturbed, accessible only on foot. It measures 2,000 acres and is located in northern New Jersey's Passaic County, comprised of forests, marshes, wetlands, and lakes.

Hiking is the best way to experience this state forest, and there are several beautiful trails to choose from, each of them offering a different experience of the park. The Surprise Lake Loop is undoubtedly the most popular—and perhaps the most challenging—trail in the park. The 4.2-mile loop trail has some serious incline; over the course of the trail, you'll gain nearly 1,000 feet in elevation. And while it's challenging, your effort will be rewarded with stunning views of the lake. There are more than a few rock scrambles, so be sure to wear sturdy footwear.

The famous Appalachian Trail also winds through the forest, and you can catch some of it on the Cascade Lake Park and Appalachian Trail Loop, a 3.4-mile moderate loop trail, some of which features a graveled road. Hikers note that the views, the challenging but fun rock scramble, and getting to be on the Appalachian Trail are highlights of this loop.

No matter which trail you choose, the opportunity to admire the forest lakes surrounded by fall foliage is nothing short of magical. If you're wondering when the leaves hit their peak colors in New Jersey, be sure to check out our handy fall foliage forecast.

Know before you go: Because of the rock scrambling involved in most of the trails within the forest, it's not a recommended hiking destination for young children. Dogs are allowed, but may also have a tricky time with the rock scrambles, so be sure to plan accordingly. For parking, you'll want to look for the designated hiker parking area across from the Greenwood Lake Marina.
